1Password vs Proton Pass: our comparison

1Password has no free tier and is known for the best family experience and Travel Mode. Proton Pass has a free tier (unlimited devices, 10 hide-my-email aliases) and is open source. We compared them for price, features and who they suit.

1Password vs Proton Pass at a glance

Proton Pass is free on unlimited devices with 10 aliases; 1Password has no free plan. 1Password Individual is about 2.74 euros/month; Proton Pass Plus is about 2.99 euros/month—so similar paid pricing. 1Password wins on family sharing (up to 5 members, shared vaults, best onboarding we have seen) and Travel Mode. Proton Pass wins on free tier, open source, hide-my-email (unlimited on Plus) and Swiss privacy. Both have built-in 2FA and passkeys. 1Password has the Secret Key and more polished apps; Proton Pass has dark web monitoring on Plus and fits the Proton ecosystem.

What we tested

We used both on Windows and Android. Import and autofill worked well. 1Password felt more polished, especially on iOS and for family setup. Proton Pass's hide-my-email was easy to use. If you already use Proton Mail, having one account for Mail and Pass is convenient. If you need the smoothest family experience and Travel Mode, 1Password is still ahead. Proton Pass is newer; the ecosystem (integrations, business features) is smaller than 1Password's.

Who should choose 1Password

- You want the best family plan and Travel Mode. - You prefer the most polished apps and do not need a free tier. - You want the Secret Key and strongest vendor support.

Who should choose Proton Pass

- You want a free tier with unlimited devices and hide-my-email. - You care about open source and Proton privacy. - You already use Proton Mail or VPN and want one account.

Our verdict

Choose 1Password if family sharing and Travel Mode are worth paying for. Choose Proton Pass if you want free, open source and hide-my-email. Both are secure; the choice is polish vs cost and privacy focus.
