Strong security without high cost
You do not need to spend a lot to get a secure password manager. Several options cost under $3 per month (or are free) and still use zero-knowledge encryption, audits, and sync across devices. We compared Bitwarden, Proton Pass, NordPass, RoboForm, and others to find the best value: what you get for the price and where the limits are.
What “cheap” means here
We focused on plans under about $3/month (or free). Bitwarden Premium is around $10/year; Proton Pass Plus and NordPass Premium are in the same ballpark when billed annually. RoboForm Premium is also low-cost. We excluded managers that are only expensive (e.g. 1Password, Dashlane) from this comparison, but they remain excellent if budget is not the main constraint.
Best value picks
Bitwarden offers the best value: free for unlimited use, or Premium for about $10/year with TOTP, health reports, and file storage. Proton Pass has a strong free tier and Pass Plus for a few euros per month with hide-my-email and dark web monitoring. NordPass and RoboForm are affordable paid options with good feature sets. Choose Bitwarden for the best free or cheapest paid; Proton Pass if you want privacy and aliases; NordPass or RoboForm if you prefer their specific features.
